There is a beautiful calm in the idea that nothing matters. The more I sink into that reality the less I believe it’s the most likely reality. Probably every single thing matters more than we could realize.
I think both are true, and that is relevant in the movie. (After all, Evelyn is the wrong decision made in every world, and therefore, the only one that can save the universe. It matters to the snail if I accidentally step on him while gardening, no matter how careful I am. (It matters to me too.) Perhaps he would have been in a different spot if I had come out a minute earlier or later, or paid a little bit different attention. But, also, we like to say things like, “I didn’t paint today, I didn’t write today, no one sees it anyway, no one notices, it must not matter…” and it can feel like it doesn’t matter. But do it anyway, because ultimately there is freedom in that. Do it anyway. Write anyway. Draw anyway. Take that picture of the snail you almost stepped on but saw in the last minute.
I still haven't seen this movie, but now I even more want/need to see it. Love the way movies can crack hoy open in the best kinds of ways like this, and love when more the way you wrote about this experience.
This movie had me fully crying in the way it connects mothers and daughters, but also how it recognizes the people in our lives who are just trying to bring us a bit of joy. It's a chaotic journey in the best of ways, with these twists and turns you really don't expect. And some super honest mom moments! My daughter loves it too... and she is not a movie person. Please let me know when you watch it, I want to hear your opinion! (And thanks for subscribing, it really means a lot to me.)
